Notes

The blank page that asks for nothing: open it and write. No title to fill in — it takes it from the first line.

What you can do

Write a note

To jot something down now without losing what you were doing.

Jot something down without opening the app

So jotting something down does not cost a trip to the dock and a window.

Find what you jotted down

To reach a note by a word inside it, not by its title.

Pin the one you always use

So the one you open daily does not sink as you write others.

How it works

Jot something down without opening the app, in three steps.

  1. 1

Press ⌘⌥N on any desktop screen.

  2. 2

Type into the box that appears on top and close it: the note lands here.

  3. 3

It also opens from ⌘K and from the desktop background menu.

How to use it

The Notes steps, one by one, are in the manual.

Read the Notes manual

What is included

  • Markdown notes, titled from their first line
  • Pin the ones you are using
  • Archive without deleting, and unarchive

What it solves

Jotting something down right now without losing what you were doing. Notes is the blank sheet that asks for nothing: you open it and write, with no title to fill in and no choosing where it goes. It saves itself, with no save button.

Who it is for

For each person on the team, for their own things: ideas, drafts, things to remember from a call. They are private: only you see them, and nobody sees another person’s.

What you can do

Write a note by starting to write: the first line is the title, as in Apple’s notes, and the content is markdown. On the desktop, ⌘⌥N opens a box on top of any screen to jot something down without going to the dock; it also opens from ⌘K and from the desktop background menu.

Search by a word from inside: the search box in the bar looks at the whole body, so a word from the third page works. Pin to the top the note you use every day, so it does not move down as you write others; the rest are sorted by the last time you touched them.

Archive what you no longer look at to take it out of the way without deleting it. With “View the archive” you see what is archived: either you see what is in front, or what is archived, never mixed.

What to keep in mind

A deleted note is not destroyed: it waits in the trash in organization Settings —only yours— and from there it comes back. Archiving deletes nothing, and pinning is undone with “Unpin”. Notes is for jotting down and nothing more: for a text that has to last, with versions, comments and team permissions, there is Documents.

Frequently asked questions

Who can see my notes?
Only you. They are private: nobody sees another person’s, not even an admin.
Do I have to save the note?
No. It saves itself as you write. The first line acts as the title, so there is no title to fill in either.
Can I search by a word from inside a note?
Yes. The search looks at the whole body of the note, not just the title.
What happens if I delete a note by mistake?
It is not destroyed: it waits in the trash in organization Settings —only yours— and from there it comes back. Archiving, besides, takes it out of the way without deleting anything.
