Messages

The team conversation inside Projekt Republic: channels per project, threads, mentions and direct messages. Free on all three editions.

What you can do

Start a conversation

So a topic gets a home instead of scattering across direct messages.

Mention someone

So the notification reaches them without a separate message.

Reply in a thread

To answer one message without cutting across the channel.

Call from the conversation

To move from typing to talking when writing costs more than speaking.

How it works

Start a conversation, in three steps.

  1. 1

Press the “+” above the conversation list.

  2. 2

Pick Direct, Group or Channel, depending on how many people it reaches.

  3. 3

Name it, add whoever takes part, and choose whether the channel is public or private.

How to use it

The Messages steps, one by one, are in the manual.

Read the Messages manual

What is included

  • Channels per project and direct messages
  • Threads, mentions and reactions
  • Calling from a channel: that is Meetings, and it needs Pro

What it solves

Work is decided in conversations, and if they live in a separate tool they get cut off from the work. Messages is the team’s conversation inside Projekt Republic: channels, groups and direct messages, with their calls inside, with channels per project. It is free in all three editions.

Who it is for

For teams that want a topic to have its own place instead of being spread across loose direct messages, and for anyone who needs to talk to a client or a collaborator from another organization without going out to another tool.

What you can do

Open a conversation with the “+” on the list and choose Direct, Group or Channel depending on how many people it reaches; a channel can be public or private, and public ones are browsed from “Channels” to join without waiting to be added.

Mention someone with “@” so the notice reaches them even with the channel closed, reply in a thread to a specific message without cutting the channel’s conversation, pin what is important —forever or until a date— and share files that anyone in the channel can download.

Call from the conversation, with the phone for voice or the camera for video, and talk to someone from another organization with “Talk to someone outside”, as long as both organizations allow it.

What to keep in mind

Calling belongs to Meetings and requires the Pro edition: in Free and in Team the call buttons are turned off and say so on hover. A channel is archived, not destroyed: it stays in the “Archived” tab, read-only, and is unarchived from its row. A message is edited or deleted from its actions, and if you edit it the mark stays.

Frequently asked questions

Is Messages free?
Yes, in all three editions. What the Pro edition requires is calling from the conversation, which is a Meetings feature: in Free and in Team the call buttons are turned off.
Can I talk to someone from another organization?
Yes, with “Talk to someone outside”. Both organizations have to allow it; if one does not, the search says so.
What happens if I archive a channel?
It is not destroyed: it stays in the “Archived” tab, read-only, and is unarchived from its own row. You can also leave a channel whenever you want from its settings and join again if it is public.
How do I make sure someone sees a message?
By mentioning them with “@”: the notice reaches them even with the channel closed. In a direct message the mention offers nobody, because the other person already knows you are talking to them.
